Maiden Flight

People who know me well know that flying isn’t my favorite thing in the world. But I would like to share a positive experience!

On the 8th of May I flew to America with WOW air. At the airport we discovered that our flight was not a regular flight, but WOW air’s inaugural flight from Keflavik to BWI Airport.

When we went to the gate for boarding, there were a lot of people. There were also speeches going on, held by very proud and happy businessmen and businesswomen. They talked about how WOW air is doing a great job, and that Keflavik will grow to twice its size. More growth, more money, et cetera.

Soon after everyone got free hamburgers, coke and sparkling water. And after the hamburgers everyone was offered a slice of a cake in the shape of the Capitol.

I was happy when we could finally board.

During take-off I’m usually very nervous. What really helped is that one of the flight attendants noticed this and gave me a comforting wink. It’s a small gesture but it was greatly appreciated.

After take-off everybody on board got complimentary champagne and even more hamburgers! The CEO and a group of other people related to WOW air were also on board and they all seemed to get quite drunk. Well, let’s say the vibe was festive.

To top this experience off, fire trucks were waiting for us at BWI Airport. Apparently it’s a tradition that inaugural flights get sprayed by water from fire trucks. 🙂

All in all a very fun flight!

My suitcase is packed again, because I’m flying to America in a couple of hours. 🙂 My first ‘out-of-Europe’ experience.

Washington D.C., New York, Annapolis, Baltimore, Amish Market in Lancaster, Mount Vernon, Ocean City and more … here we come. 🙂

We’ll be back in Iceland on the 18th of May.
