My name is Mariska and I’m 28 years old. I grew up in a Dutch city called Haarlem. It’s a lovely small town with a rich history. I spent the first 18 years of my life there, before I decided to move to Utrecht for my studies. In Utrecht I studied Philosophy and got my bachelor’s degree. I moved back to Haarlem and in the following two years I traveled to Iceland twice.
In the meantime I worked in a health store and prepared for my next studies, Editorial Studies in Amsterdam. I made it through the selections, really liked my studies and in February 2013 I got my master’s degree. I immediately started my own book editing company. Also, I instantly started thinking about how to combine my love of Iceland with my newly acquired company. This resulted in a plan that included me moving to Iceland working as a book editor from abroad.
I have worked as a book editor for Dutch publishing houses from Iceland for 2 years. Unfortunately I had to change my career path slightly because it was too difficult to keep my company going and live a comfortable life in expensive Iceland. At the beginning of 2016 I had to shut my company down and I started working at a destination management company in Reykjavik, working closely with the Dutch market.
I also started a website to give Dutch people information about living in Iceland: Wonen in IJsland.
